Netflix’s true crime thriller Mindhunter, based on John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker’s book of the same name, is rumored to return for a fourth season.
Here’s everything you need to know about Mindhunter’s fourth season, including all the latest news, release date and a series recap.
What is Mindhunter?
Mindhunter is an American crime thriller series centeredaround true crime.
The main protagonist is Holden Ford, an FBI agent working for the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit. He works alongside Bill Tench and Wendy Carr interviewing convicted serial killers in an attempt to understand the inner workings of their minds. They hope to use their newfound knowledge to solve current cases.
Season 1 Recap
The first season takes place in the late 1970s when criminal psychology was in its infancy. Serial killer, Edmund Kemper is a recurring character within the series with Ford and Tench keen to understand how he thinks.
Ford and Tench visit numerous murderers across America as they try to better their understanding of how they think. Ford’s mental health begins to deteriorate during these interviews as he befriends convicts in an attempt to gain their trust.
His methods are far from welcomed by his colleagues, but Ford appears to be making inroads. Concern for Ford peaks when a conversation with convicted rapist and serial killer, Richard Speck is revealed.
Speck then files a complaint against Ford for his comments during the interview which leads to the Office of Professional Responsibility investigating the whole team.
Meanwhile, Holden Ford’s girlfriend, Debbie, leaves him after ongoing relationship issues. This all comes to a head in the final episode of the series when Ford suffers a panic attack at a hospital thanks to an all-too-close encounter with serial killer Ed Kemper.
Season 2 Recap
The second season of Mindhunter was released in August 2019 and took place between 1980 and 1981 covering the infamous Atlanta murders. The season focuses on Wayne Williams, a suspected serial killer who was only ever charged for two murders.
There is a new head of the Behavioral Science Unit who is keen to keep a close eye on Ford. The interviewing of serial killers resumes as normal with Tench and Carr asked to keep a close watch over Ford.
Another story thread sees the return of the creepy ADT security worker who receives little screen time but will surely feature more as per the source material.
Everything You Need to Know About Season 3
As of yet, Mindhunter has not been renewed for another season. The true crime series has been put on ice while director, David Fincher, works on his other projects.
In the meantime, the cast have been allowed to seek new work. Fans shouldn’t expect a third season anytime soon but there is likely still plans to continue the show in the future.
It has been reported that five seasons of Mindhunter have been planned. Whether or not that plan will be carried out is currently unknown.
When Will Season 3 Return to Our Screens?
If the series does make a comeback, it would be after Fincher’s latest project, Mank, is released in 2021. That would likely mean that filming will not commence until next year and will likely take a similar amount of time to film as season 2 did. Taking this into account, 2022 is a likely estimate for Season 3’s release.
Who Will be Making a Return in Season 3?
Expect to see all the familiar faces of the main cast making a return when Mindhunter season 3 is greenlit. Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff), Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) and Wendy Carr (Anna Tory) are all likely to be featured heavily.
A host of season 2 regulars including Bill’s wife Nancy (Stacey Roca), Greg Smith (Joe Tuttle) and head of the Behavioral Science Unit, Ted Gunn (Michael Cerveris) are also likely to make their returns.
