The Last Kingdom is a British TV series set in 9th Century England. It follows Uhtred, a Saxon-born Dane who is constantly at odds to prove his loyalties. The series is an adaptation from The Saxon Stories. Here’s a recap of what’s gone down in the series thusfar, and all we know about season 4.

What Has Happened So Far?

Season 1

The series protagonist, Uhtred, son of Uhtred believes he is the rightful heir to Bebbanburg. Uhtred was born a Saxon but raised a Dane after he and his friend, Breda, are captured and taken to Danish Northumbria. Now fully-grown adults, Uhtred and Breda develop a romantic relationship.

Uhtred is to be married to Thyra, his adopted father’s daughter. A Saxon invasion lead by Uhtred’s uncle burns their town to the ground, killing Uhtred’s adopted father in the process. Thyra is taken as a slave.

Ragnar, the son of Uhtred’s deceased adopted father, questions his involvement but accepts that Uhtred is telling the truth.

Alfred of Wessex and Uhtred strike a deal to work together in order to defeat the Saxon army. However, the Saxon army was victorious.

Season 2

At the start of season two, Uhtred frees a slave named Guthred who is believed to be the true king of Northumbria. Uhtred takes a liking to Guthred’s sister but is perceived to be a threat and is sold as a slave. Breda and Ragnar then convince Alfred to help free Uhtred.

Uhtred and Ragnar then set about rescuing Ragnar’s sister Thyra. Thyra had been living in a dungeon since she was kidnapped by Kjartan and Sven, a father and son banished by the Danes. Ragnar savagely beats Kjartan to death for his role in his father’s death and sister’s capture.

Three years later, Uhtred is living peacefully with his wife Gisela, when he is informed of a prophecy that states he will be king. In truth, this is a ploy from brothers Siegfrid and Erik to enlist Uhtred’s help in defeating Alfred.

Alfred’s daughter, Aethelflaed, is captured by Siegfried and Erik and ends up falling in love with Erik. Sadly, for Aethelflaed, Erik is killed in battle by his brother Siegfrid, who discovered his plot to run away with her. Siegfrid then storms into battle against Alfred and is killed by Aethelflaed.

Season 3

Season three picks up two years later when Gisela passes away during childbirth.

Alfred’s health is declining throughout season three before he dies. Before passing away, Alfred is able to unite divided kingdoms with the help of Uhtred, who he recognizes will be needed to protect the Saxons from the Danes.

Major deaths during season three include Uhtred’s brother Ragnar and sister Thyra.

When Can We Expect The Last Kingdom Season 4 to Come Out?

At the end of 2018, work on the fourth season was anounced through Twitter with a short video. In mid 2019, it was confirmed that Netflix was indeed filming content for 10 more episodes. Finally, it was announced on Instagram that the show will be released in 2020—but that’s all we know. Nothing else has been announced yet, so be patient!

The next book to be adapted from The Saxon Stories series is set ten years after the events of the last. This means we can expect to see Uhtred’s children all grown up as well as a set of new charcters. It should be an interesting and awesome season.
