With so many entry-level 4K televisions on the market these days it can start to feel like an overload of choices. Despite this, many people have been buying one set in particular lately – the Toshiba 50LF711U20. This is a 50 inch Smart TV with HDR and 4K and has recently become a #1 best seller on Amazon.

At first glance, it makes sense why this TV set has become so popular. It offers all of the major product features people are looking for, it comes at a nice size and all for a very affordable price. But is it the best budget 4K TV you can grab? Is it still worth every penny? Let’s find out now – here is my breakdown of the Toshiba 50LF711U20.

Build Quality

My first prediction about the Toshiba 50LF711U20 was that like many large TVs in this low price range, it must have cut corners when it came to physical quality. And while I was right, I was surprised to find out that less corners were cut than expected.

The Toshiba 50LF711U20 is a little on the thick side which makes it not the most ideal choice for wall-mounting. However, it isn’t too thick and still fits very well on any table or cabinet that will fit the 50 inch set.

The stands are actually fairly thick, much thicker than some stands equipped on larger TVs. There’s still a little bit of wobble whenever it is moved but the movement is dampened almost instantly and is basically a non-issue.

The borders of the TV were a little too thick for my liking but they are practically invisible when viewed in the dark. The casing of the TV is, as expected, made from fairly cheap materials but it’s still well put together and overall doesn’t cause any issues.

Smart TV Features

The Toshiba 50LF711U20 uses the Amazon Fire TV Smart OS for its Smart TV applications. It’s a pretty attractive interface that reminds me of Netflix’s UI except that it’s blue instead of red. Accessing apps is extremely easy as all thumbnails are very well displayed. The speed and smoothness of the Fire TV OS is great and it has an excellent track record for app compatibility. Plus, the built-in Youtube app now supports HDR 10 which is just fantastic.

Overall, I was very impressed with the Toshiba 50LF711U20 Smart TV functions and experienced no hiccups whatsoever.

Picture Quality

I’ll just come out and say it – this is far from the best looking 4K TV out there. It’s by no means bad but it comes off as pretty disappointing in a few areas.

For one thing, the viewing angles are not good. If you’re not staring at this TV straight-on, the colors will look very faded out. It also doesn’t have the widest or the most accurate representation of the color spectrum. It can also be subject to some annoying flickering during fast paced movement. The HDR is good, but it only comes off as decent when it comes to the brightest of scenery.

Despite these issues, the Toshiba 50LF711U20 is great for 4K pixel density, contrast and it handles reflections much better than most TVs in this price range. Overall, the image quality of this TV is around what I expected, but with such a low price I would still deem it worth buying.

Conclusion

To answer the question, is the Toshiba 50LF711U20 worth the price? Will you be getting enough bang for your buck? My answer is definitely yes. It may be lacking in some areas but it still manages to make up for it not just with the low price, but with some very impressive Smart TV features, decent build quality and pretty decent picture quality for 4K resolution. If you’re looking for a budget 4K set, I doubt you’ll have any regrets with the Toshiba 50LF711U20.
